Samson marries a Philistine wife. He makes a feast for 30 companions. Sometime during this party Samson proposes a riddle with the prize being 30 linen garments and 30 changes of clothes; if no one solved the riddle they were to give 30 linen garments and changes of clothes to Samson.

The Philistines persuade Samson’s wife to get the answer and she does. When Samson finds out he lost the bet he threw a dying duck’s fit. He went into town and killed the 30 men. In the meantime Samson’s father-in-law, thinking Samson hates his daughter, gives Samson’s wife to the best man instead.

So Samson catches 300 foxes, turns them tail-to-tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails. Then he let the pairs of foxes go in the grain fields of the Philistines, burning everything, even the olive orchards.

I often wondered about those poor foxes and what became of them. I’d like to think that…those poor creatures had somewhere to go for proper medical attention…that a woman was taking a little stroll through the woods when she smelled the smoke and saw hundreds of foxes running toward her…that God helped her to know exactly what to do. …that in the end God’s grace breaks through the short-fused mean-spirited actions of another, and creates something new.
