We can make a lot of significant changes through hard work; but try as we might, we cannot create a new heart within ourselves. Only the Lord can do that. He said, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26) Here in the still of the night, is a woman bringing her heart in all its brokenness to the Lord, asking for what only He can do.

Before God works, He often asks us to surrender. When I was ready to put all my chips in the middle and bet everything on Jesus, my life was completely turned around and filled with joy—undiluted, 100% grade A joy. It is my foundation for uncurling my tight little fists that hold onto things that will only destroy me. In God’s kindness I find my greatest hope, significance and security. The many fears and needs that have such power over me become mere shadows and sometimes even disappear, becoming only a faint memory. These clumsy little words are but a small glimpse of God’s outrageous love for the human race.
