Isaiah 14:3-23
“To the hard of hearing you shout, and to the almost blind you draw large startling figures.”
--Flannery O’Connor
Philip Yancey writes in “The Bible Jesus Read:”
“Isaiah 14 should be chiseled over the gravestone of every tyrant in history, from Sennacherib to Nebuchadnezzar to Hitler and Stalin and Pol Pot. It depicts long-dead rulers rising from the grave to greet the new ones: ‘You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us,’ they say; ‘Maggots are spread out beneath you and worms cover you.’ Eventually, all tyrants meet the same fate: ‘Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble?’ people will ask. Isaiah urged his people to put their faith in God alone.”
